The FBT-6 samples the noise signal on a regular basis, but not continuously. As a result, it is normal for a continuous noise signal to produce peak noise measurements that are higher than average noise measurements. For example, the average noise would be about 70% of the peak noise level if the noise was a sine wave.

If a peak noise measurement is bad you should look into it.

Try resetting the peak noise values to 0 (hold down the SEL button for 3-4 seconds) then see how long it takes for the peak noise level to go back to what it was. If it happens in a few seconds, you have a continuous noise issue. If it takes more than say a minute, it is an intermittent noise.

Knowing if the noise is intermittent or continuous can help you identify the source. Continuous noise could be caused by FF cables running parallel to high current power lines. Intermittent noise could be caused by something like a large load (motor or pump) turning on/off.

Let me know if you need more help.
